Holding Stories

Holding Stories is a training programme for people who facilitate, commission or work with storytelling in community and organisational settings. It focuses on the ethical, relational and practical responsibilities involved in holding other people’s stories — particularly stories connected to harm, identity, marginalisation or lived experience.

The training supports participants to develop confidence, clarity and care in creating storytelling spaces that prioritise consent, dignity, boundaries and choice.

It is suitable for facilitators, artists, community workers, educators and organisations using storytelling as part of their practice.

Accredited Restorative Storytelling Training

We offer accredited training in Understanding Restorative Storytelling at Level 1 and Level 2, awarded through OCN NI.

Our courses combine restorative practice, storytelling and lived experience to support people to develop confidence, ethical awareness and practical skills in using storytelling for connection, learning and social change.

Training is suitable for individuals, community practitioners and organisations, and can be delivered online or in person.

Level 1 – Understanding Restorative Storytelling

Understanding the basic dynamics and values of restorative storytelling

This Level 1 accredited course introduces learners to the core principles, values and processes of restorative storytelling. Participants explore what a story is, what makes a story restorative, and how values shape ethical and respectful storytelling practice.

The course supports learners to:

  • Understand the foundations of storytelling
  • Reflect on personal values and their role in storytelling
  • Explore how restorative stories are prepared and shared
  • Plan and take part in a restorative storytelling session

This course is ideal for those new to restorative storytelling or seeking a gentle, reflective introduction to storytelling practice.

Level 2 – Understanding Restorative Storytelling

Developing confidence, ethics and leadership in storytelling practice

This Level 2 accredited course builds on the foundations of Level 1, supporting learners to deepen their understanding of restorative storytelling and its application in community and organisational contexts.

Participants explore:

  • The benefits of restorative storytelling
  • How to create safe and inclusive storytelling spaces
  • Ethical considerations when developing storytelling projects or campaigns
  • Leadership qualities and the role of active listening in advocacy storytelling
  • The VTV (Vulnerability, Trust and Validation) framework and the importance of community engagement

This course is suited to those who want to use storytelling more intentionally in their work, practice or community involvement.

Both courses are assessed through reflective and practical coursework, supporting learners to apply learning in ways that feel meaningful and relevant.
